Alexa Marie Brown, “Alexita,” died Thursday, August 24 at age 16.
Born in Phillipsburg, Alexa was known for her wide range of hobbies, including cheerleading, softball, and basketball, in which she became “a competitor on and off the court” with the help of her father, her obituary says. She played on several basketball teams, including the Steele Hill Bulldogs, Steele Hill Warriors and Team Jenkins.
“She was feisty, tenacious and quickly recognized as a tough defender,” reads her memorial, adding that the talented teen aspired to attend Duke University and play for the WNBA.
Alexa loved all things art, including music, dancing, and fashion. She also dreamt of one day moving to New York City to pursue a career in the fashion industry after high school.
Alexa had an incredibly dedicated work ethic and put her entire being into whatever goals she set for herself.
“Alexa consistently went above and beyond, exceeding any expectations set forth, which continually proves she’s an asset to any team,” reads her memorial.
Meanwhile, Alexa was deeply family-oriented and developed close relationships with her sisters, Kaylee and Naomi, as well as her two brothers, Oliver and Cesar (Mateo).
During her lifetime, Alexa was passionate about her religion and wanted to bring others closer to the Lord through her prayers.
Above all, Alexa leaves a legacy of kindness and compassion for all people. She had a rare gift for consistently uplifting others and making them feel better — “not only about the moment but about themselves,” her obituary says.
“She was honest and bold, and she wore her heart on her sleeve; emotionally connecting to all who knew her. She was truly beautiful, inside and out….She selflessly brought her laugh and a joke to any situation, and she will never be forgotten.”
In addition to her siblings, Alexa leaves behind her loving parents, Ashley Mae Covington (Daryl), and Cesar Jonathan Azambuja; great-grandparents, Barbara Ann Coscia (William), Lorraine Ruth Brown(Everett), and Valerie Elaine Williams; grandparents, Everett Michael and Coleen Marie Brown, Marleni Pinto Contreras and Rafael Del Valle, Cesar Azambuja Camac, Kimara Lovelace, Daryl Covington (Deborah); aunts and uncles, Michael Everett Brown (Jennifer), Krista Marie Glauser (Jess), Aaron Michael Brown, Vanessa Natalia Azambuja (Austin), and Marco Antonio Azambuja Pinto; as well as many extended family members and close friends.
Meanwhile, more than $6,800 had been raised on a GoFundMe for Alexa’s funeral expenses as of Monday, Sept. 11.
“Alexa's parents, Ashley and Daryl Covington, are heartbroken over losing their daughter and at the same time have been hit with the unexpected financial burden that funerals cost these days,” reads the campaign. “But we know, with God all things are possible. Please pray and consider helping with their funeral expenses in any way you can.”
Alexa’s funeral was held at Greater Shiloh Church in Easton on Saturday, Sept. 9.
